DLD College was founded in 1931 and is one of the oldest independent colleges in London. Today, DLD College has over 500 students studying Academic English, GCSE, A Lvel, Inbterntional Foundation Programmes (IFP) and BTEC.
DLD is a member of the Independent Schools Association and was inspected in 2011. The college is a member of the Boarding Schools' Association.
DLD is also listed in the Good Schools Guide www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk. The college has won several national Good Schools Guide awards over the years for the best AS Photography (girls in an independent school), Italian (boys in an independent school) and A Level English Literature results (boys in an independent school).
The vast majority of students are taking their A Levels in the usual way (over two years), however we have a significant number who join the college at the start of Upper Sixth. No subject restrictions apply at A Level.
Additionally, there are over 20 GCSE students at DLD. All GCSE syllabuses are fully covered so students don't need to worry about changing exam boards or subjects. GCSE can be taken as a one year intensive programme. A two year programme is also offered for international students the first year of which comprises intensive preparatory Academic English lessons.
The College also offers Academic English lessons alongside A level, IFP and BTEC programmes for international students who have not yet achieved IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
For all our programmes, classes are small compared to most schools and college. This means that students quickly develop the confidence to seek guidance and help. The teaching staff are highly qualified and chosen not just for their expertise but also for their ability to relate positively to young people. The college aims to make learning interesting, active and rigorous. A large number of the teaching staff were educated at Oxford or Cambridge and many hold graduate qualifications including masters and doctorates. Most teachers are full time and salaried.
Each student is assigned a personal tutor to supervise their welfare (pastoral care, liaise with parents or guardians and assist them with their university (UCAS) applications. We have a specially appointed UCAS coordinator who oversees all UCAS applications and arranges visits from university admissions officers to talk to DLD students about developing attractive applications. We also have dedicated Director of Careers who can offer information, advice and guidance to students on their future options.. DLD also arranges additional preparation and practice interviews for those applying to Oxford & Cambridge as well as those applying for Medicine & Dentistry.
In the College's most recent ISA inspection report it was concluded that "Students like being at the college and are very happy with the personal support they receive; they feel well looked after and are very appreciative of the help and guidance given generously by the staff. They develop strong personal skills in a pleasant family atmosphere. The wide mix of nationalities works well together in a friendly, safe and supportive environment".
